about this program

Program
Overview

The SET classroom is a part of the Emotional Support program of the Chambersburg Area School District. It is not considered an alternative education setting, but rather, a part of the special education continuum of support classrooms. The students must be in 9th-12th grades. Each student would have a mental health diagnosis (i.e. depression, anxiety, and school phobia), while not having exhibited any physical acting out behaviors. The academic abilities of each student can vary, but every student is within low normal to above normal intellectual functioning. Each student will have their own Individual Education Plan (IEP) to address academic, behavioral, emotional and social needs.

The program is offered in an off-site facility, which reduces school anxiety and fears often associated with attending a larger, public school facility.

Mission

The mission of the SET classroom is to provide a caring learning environment where students are able to develop positive self-concepts, and enhance their self-esteem to allow them to become motivated to learn. We are committed to developing lifelong learners who value themselves and the diversity of all people. Each student will:

  • Develop the social skills and decision-making skills necessary so they will learn to act responsibly.
  • Use creativity, critical thinking and problem solving to meet the challenges in a changing society.
  • Benefit from an educational program designed to enable each student to develop to their ability level, gain a base knowledge and hands on ways to use these skills to gain a High School Diploma and seek gainful employment.
  • Transfer these skills to enable them to adapt to new settings within different school settings, or out in the community.
