Program OverviewCrossings is a
multidimensional, dynamic parenting program that supports, guides, and strengthens
adolescent parents and their children. The goal of the program is to reduce child
maltreatment by improving parent/child outcomes including better self-sufficiency for teen
parents, healthier and happier children, and a physically and psychologically safer living
environment.
The cornerstone of the program is home visitation, for teens and
their families until the teen turns 21, insuring sufficient duration and intensity to
establish healthy parenting behaviors at various developmental stages of the child. As
well, parenting groups, socialization opportunities, and the provision of respite care for
the children of teen parents is offered. Emphasis is placed upon assisting teen mothers
and fathers in developing healthy, nurturing relationships with their children, providing
health education developmentally appropriate for both teens and their children, and
supporting teens in completing requirements for a high school diploma or equivalent.
Program Objectives
- Sustain and enrich the capacity of families to maintain nurturing
environments for themselves and their children.
- Plan for subsequent pregnancies from the viewpoint of goals for
self and the nurturing needs of each child.
- Identify a plan and/or maintain efforts to complete a high school
diploma or equivalent.
- Enhance the health and well being of children.
- Reduce internal and external stresses associated with early
parenting.
Outcomes Measured
- Increased knowledge and attitudes regarding parenting as measured
by the Adult Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI)
- Postponement of subsequent childbearing for at least two years.
- Completion, or plan to complete secondary education requirements.
- Maintenance of regular well baby visits and immunization schedules.
- Decrease in reported stressors and an increase in the ability to
parent from a more nurturing perspective.
Funding
Crossings is funded by: Pennsylvanias
Childrens Trust Fund, Summit Health Endowment, United Way of Franklin County,

"Crossings evolved from the
understanding that teen parents must face many transitions, or crossings, as they assume
the responsibilities of raising a child."
