Centers are in operation from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and may include an optional evening intensive component for students who need structure and supervision beyond traditional hours. Manito’s Centers are licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare as Day Treatment Services. Youth are accepted into Manito who are between the ages of 12 and 18. Most referrals to the program are experiencing behavioral, social, family or educational problems. Common issues include: school failure, oppositional behaviors, truancy, substance abuse, family dysfunction and delinquency.
Social Skills & Counseling
Instruction on pro-social skills is a core component of the program at Manito. The "Manito Way" models teach competency in communications, conflict resolution, problem solving and anger management. Adventure based activities are used to enhance self-concept, team development skills, cooperation, and trust. Victim impact classes teach personal responsibility and respect for others and the community.
Individual counseling is available to all students at Manito. Trained counselors assist students to improve self awareness and self understanding, set goals, explore new positive behaviors, and develop problem solving and decision making skills.
Family Therapy and Drug and Alcohol Counseling Services provided by Masters level therapists may also be available.
Funding
Funding for Therapeutic and Alternative Education services at Manito is a joint effort of county commissioners and public school districts. Grant funding via Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth can be used to offset these costs.
Manito Therapeutic Education Centers are a division of Manito, Inc., a private, non-profit corporation.
