At York Manito site, new efforts try to add consistency to kids' lives. The therapeutic center has started new programs at the York center and in one school district.
2012 was the third year the Alternative High School and Chambersburg Center volunteered at the Chambersburg Ice Festival. This is the 10th year for ICE FEST which is sponsored by Downtown Chambersburg Inc., and the Council for the Arts. It is the 2nd largest Ice Festival in Pennsylvania and includes live ice carving by DiMartino Ice Company, a Snowfall Ball, Chili Cook-off, Fireworks, and a Polar Dunk Tank. Students and staff assisted the ice carvers in constructing a 40 foot ice slide, building giant ice walls, offloading 100- 250 lb. ice blocks, setting up over 60 smaller ice carvings through-out the downtown area, and working with the sculptors as they carved 7 larger ice pieces. Students had the opportunity to be a part of a unique experience working with the event organizers to set up the festival; but what they really enjoyed was helping the craftsmen as they created with power tools, and seeing the sculptures move from blocks to art.
Brain Freeze Is…what happens when you go into an environment in which you don’t feel comfortable. What happens as soon as a student enters a room/class/subject in which they don’t feel competent? How is Manito Helping with This Issue? Presenting information through CORE concepts in a Brain Based format serves to “relax” the brain allowing learning to occur. Manito’s education centers are using the new Brain Based format toreach students who typically experience “brain freeze” in the classroom allowing them to experience greater academic success!
